Social Media
Friend or Foe?

When
I think of socializing I think of
spending time with my friends or family whether its having dinner, watching a
movie or just getting together in one’s home. Now days you don’t even have to
leave your seat to mingle with your loved ones. Instead, you can just snap a selfie, click, and connect to one of the vast
social networks that are out there
and be instantly connected to not one but numerous followers. As much as, this
new found technology sounds wonderful
it is not to say it does not come without its consequences and responsibilities.
(1) In a recent article I just read it
talked about Social Detriments in the areas of cyber bullying which
have led to emotional trauma, and suicide among children and young
adults. 49.5% of students attested being victims of bullying and 33.7%
acknowledged they were the bullies. Studies done in 2012 demonstrated a minimum
800,000 adolescents had been bullied on Facebook and Middle School children were
nearly twice as likely to try to commit suicide when faced with cyber-bullying. (1)
Children who utilize social media at very young age are at higher risk for
depression, low confidence, and eating disorders due to not having physical
interaction more importantly this can be detrimental to children and youths
with disabilities. For this reason, I believe that as a parent it is imperative
to speak to our children about the dangers of Social Media and how they can
protect themselves from being a victims of cyber bullying.
